Farewell to Xylouris: The Legendary 'Psaroyiannis' Who Became the Voice of Crete

Yiannis Xylouris, known as 'Psaroyiannis', a legendary figure in Cretan musical tradition and brother of Nikos Xylouris and Psarantonis, passed away at the age of 83. Psaroyiannis was an exceptional loutier, creator and guardian of Cretan music, with a huge influence on the sound of the island. The news of his death caused grief and emotion in Crete, especially in Anogia, where he was born in 1943. Raised in a family with deep roots in Cretan music, Yiannis Xylouris showed his talent for the lute, lyra and mandolin from a young age. He collaborated with leading artists of Cretan music, such as Kostas Mountakis and Vasilis Skoulas, and participated in numerous recording projects, establishing himself as one of the most recorded loutiers of his time. He did not limit himself to the role of accompanist, but also engaged in composition and singing, creating modern Cretan songs that combined tradition with elements of art music. His musical legacy is an invaluable heritage for Crete and Greece.
