Coming 'Smart' Glasses with Automatic Focus – How They're Changing Our Vision

A Finnish startup, IXI, is developing 'smart' glasses that automatically adjust the focus of their lenses in real-time, using liquid crystal technology and eye-tracking sensors. Unlike traditional bifocal or progressive lenses, IXI glasses dynamically adapt to what the user is looking at, providing clear vision at all distances. This technology uses a series of photodiodes and LEDs to track eye movement, reflecting invisible infrared light. The system determines where the user is looking and adjusts the liquid crystal lenses accordingly, creating an optimized reading area for close-up work and allowing clear distance vision. According to IXI CEO, Niko Eiden, traditional progressive glasses combine three different lenses into one, causing distortion in peripheral vision and a limited viewing channel. IXI glasses, with dynamic focus, eliminate these limitations. The company has raised over $40 million in funding and plans to launch the glasses within the next year. The glasses are lightweight, weighing around 22 grams, and are designed to resemble conventional glasses.
