Ercihurman: Proposal for a Bi-communal Committee on Halloumi - Turkish Cypriot Side Ready for Cooperation in Agriculture and Livestock

Turkish Cypriot politician Tufan Ercihurman proposes the establishment of a bi-communal technical committee on the issue of halloumi, while also expressing the readiness of the Turkish Cypriot side for cooperation in the fields of agriculture and livestock. This proposal comes at a time of difficulties in combating foot-and-mouth disease. Mr. Ercihurman calls for the immediate signing of an agreement to begin inspections in the occupied territories, as part of the protection of Cypriot cheese, arguing that the Turkish Cypriot community has already carried out timely and rapid vaccinations. He also states that vaccines have been offered to the free areas when needed. Regarding halloumi, Mr. Ercihurman emphasizes that the Turkish Cypriot side is awaiting the completion of procedures to begin inspections, pointing out that there was a commitment to resolve the issue by January 31st, without result. He expresses the desire of the Turkish Cypriot side to be inspected and calls on the Government to sign the necessary agreements. Mr. Ercihurman also calls for a joint approach to similar risks in the agricultural sector and warns the Greek Cypriot side to stop using the Turkish Cypriot side as an excuse to deal with internal criticism, and to focus on its responsibilities for the good of the whole island.
