Erhiyurman: Turkish Cypriots Will Not Accept a Solution Without Political Equality

Published January 26, 2026, 19:18

Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhiyurman, stated that Turkish Cypriots will not accept a solution to the Cyprus issue that does not include political equality, reiterating their long-standing position that they are “one of the two equal founding partners” of the island. He emphasized that any negotiation must have a time limit, otherwise they will continue to institutionalize their own structure. Erhiyurman expressed his desire for the best possible relations with Turkey, recognizing its role as a guarantor power on the island. He argued that the “Greek Cypriot leadership” has not shown a willingness to share power, sovereignty, and natural resources with the Turkish Cypriots, which is the main obstacle to resolving the problem. Erhiyurman stated that he is willing to negotiate only if political equality is accepted, otherwise there will be no agreement.
