Erhurman: Turkish Cypriots Will Not Accept a Solution Without Political Equality

Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, stated that Turkish Cypriots will not agree to a Cyprus settlement that does not guarantee political equality. He emphasized that Turkish Cypriots consider themselves equal founding partners of the island and that any negotiations must have a timeframe, otherwise they will continue to “institutionalize their own structure.” Erhurman noted that Turkish Cypriots desire full participation in the world and not to live in isolation. Furthermore, he highlighted the need for cooperation with Turkey, which is a guarantor power on the island, to achieve a solution. He expressed the view that the main reason for the failure of previous negotiations was the lack of willingness on the part of the Greek Cypriot leadership to share power, sovereignty, and natural resources. Reaffirming his desire for the best possible relations with Turkey, Erhurman stated that political equality is a necessary condition for any agreement.
