Investigation Launched After Antisemitic Attack on Synagogue in Belgium

Following an explosion that occurred in front of a synagogue in Liège, Belgium, the Belgian government condemned the incident as a "despicable antisemitic act." The explosion, which took place in the early hours of Monday, caused no injuries but damaged windows in nearby buildings. The federal prosecutor's office has taken over the investigation, as authorities believe the attack was targeted at the Jewish community. Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever expressed his solidarity with the Jewish community and emphasized that antisemitism is an attack on the values of society. Interior Minister Bernard Quentien described the explosion as a "despicable antisemitic act" and announced the strengthening of security measures around synagogues and other Jewish sites. The mayor of Liège, Willy Demayé, also condemned the act, stressing the importance of harmonious coexistence between different communities in the city. The investigation has been transferred to the federal level, with investigators from the federal judicial police specializing in counter-terrorism being sent to the scene. The incident comes at a time of increased tension in the Middle East, with recent attacks between Iran and Israel. The Jewish community in Belgium, numbering around 50,000 people, has already experienced increased security measures in recent years, particularly after the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, which led to an increase in antisemitic incidents.
