Foot-and-Mouth Disease Measures in Cyprus: Road Closures and Disinfection Stations

Roads leading to livestock farms in Troulloi have been closed, and six disinfection stations are being constructed to combat foot-and-mouth disease. Deputy Mayor of Troulloi, Spyros Pampoullou, stated that vehicles passing through the area are being sprayed and the cost of the disinfection stations is expected to reach 30-35 thousand euros. The decision to implement these measures was made following the announcement of a foot-and-mouth disease case on a sheep and goat farm in the area, although the farmer disputes the sampling result. The Deputy Mayor expressed concern about the potential impact on milk and meat production. The issue was raised with the President of DISY, Annita Dimitriou, with a request for a second sample to confirm the result. There are a total of 13 livestock farms in the Troulloi area, with approximately 600 cows and 10,000 sheep and goats. In Athienou, they are in a waiting state, with strict preventive measures in place, such as spraying vehicles and restricting access to farms. In Athienou, there are approximately 15,000 cows and 15,000 sheep and goats on 27 farms.
