Outraged Mayor of Paleochori After School Bus Accident: “We Have Been Left to God’s Mercy”

The Mayor of Paleochori, Tasos Michaelides, expressed strong concern and outrage following a traffic accident involving a school bus that injured students. During an interview on the ENIMEROSI TORA show, the mayor denounced the lack of adequate police coverage and medical support in the area, stating that there is only one police officer and no ambulance available. He questioned the adequacy of existing resources and the priority given to citizen safety, emphasizing that the area has been left "to God’s mercy". Mr. Michaelides strongly criticized the spokesperson of OKYPY, Charalambos Charilaou, for the handling of the incident, arguing that the value of human life cannot be calculated with numbers. He expressed the view that the delay in providing assistance is a result of a lack of resources and the overload of the only ambulance serving the Cleros area. Furthermore, the community leader of Paleochori reported a previous incident that highlights the lack of adequate police coverage. According to his complaint, a police officer was forced to ask the mayor to "cover" him so he could attend another incident, as there was no one else available to monitor the detention center. The mayor concluded by posing a critical question to the competent authorities: "What would happen if the incident was more serious and what would our life be like from now on?" His statement underlines the urgent need to improve infrastructure and staffing of services in the area to ensure the safety of citizens.
