Union of Municipalities Completes Consultations on Reform

The Union of Municipalities of Cyprus has concluded a series of consultations in Limassol regarding the Local Government reform. The President of the Union, Andreas Vyras, emphasized the importance of listening to the views of the Municipalities and the need for state investment in Local Government to satisfy citizens. A key demand remains the increase of state grants to a fixed percentage of the state budget, taking inflation into account, as the current amount of 117 million euros has been devalued due to rising prices. In addition, waste management and the implementation of the “Pay As You Throw” system were discussed, which the Municipalities will not implement until outstanding issues are resolved. Finally, the digital transition through the “Evagoras” project and the concern about the delay in integrating School Boards into the Municipalities, as planned for 2029, were mentioned. The Mayor of Limassol, Yiannis Armeftis, underlined the need for decentralization and administrative/financial autonomy of the Municipalities.
