Hotel Owners Concerned Over Flight Cancellations from Europe – Reopening Delays Considered

Continuous flight cancellations from Europe, due to the conflict in the Middle East, are causing significant concern among Cypriot hoteliers. The cancellations, which began last Saturday, affect flights to and from Israel, countries in the Middle East, as well as European destinations such as Germany, England, and Austria. This is leading to considerations of postponing the reopening of hotel units that had planned to open at the end of March or early April. According to data from Hermes Airports, on Wednesday, March 4th, Larnaca Airport recorded 24 arrival and 24 departure cancellations, while Paphos Airport recorded 12 departures and 9 arrivals. In total, cancellations have exceeded 250 since last Saturday. Meanwhile, repatriation flights for Cypriots stranded in areas affected by the crisis in the Middle East have begun. The first chartered flight from Dubai is expected to bring 180 people back to Cyprus, while it is estimated that 3 or 4 flights will be needed to return all Cypriots who wish to return to the island. Over 700 Cypriot citizens are currently in the United Arab Emirates. On Tuesday evening, eight Cypriots from Israel and four from Cairo returned to Cyprus via Egypt. The situation at Larnaca and Paphos airports remains at a high level of security, with stringent measures in place. Airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Easy Jet, and Austrian Airlines are constantly adjusting their flight schedules according to developments in the region. The concern among hoteliers is significant, as flight cancellations directly affect tourist traffic. The potential postponement of hotel reopenings will have economic consequences for the Cypriot tourism sector.
