Doctors at Larnaca General Hospital Consider Resigning Amidst Wave of Complaints

Pambos Charilaou, Spokesperson for the Cyprus Public Health Insurance Organisation (OKYPY), strongly criticised the continuous publicisation of complaints against Larnaca General Hospital without presenting the other side of the story. Mr. Charilaou called for an end to the "public shaming" of the hospital staff, emphasising that the complaints are causing sadness and discouragement among doctors and nurses. He also mentioned that the hospital staff are considering resigning and turning to the private sector, where they would be "safe". Mr. Charilaou stressed the need for a code of ethics between the parties and emphasised that OKYPY wants complaints to be submitted, but in a way that ensures objectivity and protects the reputation of the staff. He explained that public hospitals deal with a large volume of patients and cases every day, and that complaints should be carefully examined before being publicised. Referring to a specific case of a 92-year-old's death, Mr. Charilaou admitted that OKYPY was not informed and that an investigation is underway. However, he pointed out that public hospitals receive the most complex cases from all over Cyprus, while complaints about private hospitals are non-existent. He stressed that both public and private hospitals are funded by taxpayers. Mr. Charilaou expressed his concern about the repeated complaints and called on all parties involved to take responsibility. He reiterated that OKYPY is willing to investigate every complaint, but in a way that ensures fairness and protects the reputation of the staff.
