Tension in Livadia: Farmers Block Farm, Preventing Animal Culling Amid Foot-and-Mouth Outbreak

Tension erupted in Livadia, Larnaca, between farmers and Veterinary Services officials when farmers blocked access to their farm to prevent the culling of animals due to a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Veterinary Services reported that while the farm initially had 30 animals, a total of 109 were found, a matter currently under investigation. The Police were called to the scene to mediate and restore order. The Veterinary Services expressed concern over unacceptable practices that endanger the livestock sector, noting that the vast majority of farmers are cooperating responsibly to contain the virus. However, they reported isolated cases undermining efforts, such as obstructing veterinary services and concealing or moving animals. In their announcement, the Veterinary Services emphasized the need for strict adherence to the law to protect the livestock sector and eradicate the virus. They pointed out that they are facing threats, obstruction, and concealment of animals when implementing legal measures. Finally, the Veterinary Services reassured farmers of their continued support and called on everyone to demonstrate responsibility, honesty, and full compliance with the measures to address the crisis. They also thanked the other services assisting their work, such as the Police, the National Guard, the Game and Wildlife Service, and the Forestry Department.
