A court in Paris has convicted a former French senator of administering ecstasy to a Member of Parliament with the intent to sexually assault her. Joel Guerrio, 68, was found guilty of attempted rape or sexual assault, as well as possession and use of narcotics. The court rejected the defense's claim that the administration of the substance was accidental. The case has sparked strong reactions in France, recalling a similar conviction in 2024. Guerrio was sentenced to four years in prison, with two and a half years suspended, and the execution of the sentence was postponed pending an appeal. The MP testified that she felt unwell after drinking champagne offered by Guerrio and suspected she had been drugged.
