Shelter Checks Reveal 194 Unsuitable, New Safety App Launched

Following inspections of 2,480 Civil Defence shelters, it was found that 194 are no longer suitable or do not exist and have been decommissioned. Additionally, 288 shelters have changed their usage status and are now private. The Ministry of Interior announced an upgrade to the SafeCY application for the early information of citizens in emergencies, with notifications sent via mobile phones. Simultaneously, the “Civil Protection Law of 2026” has been approved to create a National Civil Protection Mechanism, and Fire Chief Nikos Longinos has been appointed as the interim coordinator for fire management. These actions are part of the evolution of civil defence into a modern civil protection system, aiming to protect citizens and enhance resilience.
