Audit Office Report: Uncontrolled State Forest Land - Natura, Hotels, and Delayed Revenue

A report by the Audit Office reveals serious weaknesses in the management of state forest land in Cyprus during the period 2018-2024. The report highlights deficiencies in documentation, omissions in environmental procedures, and delays leading to losses of public revenue and risks to biodiversity. Specifically, problems are identified in leases within Natura 2000 areas, such as the 'Adventure Park' in Foinou, where the land granted was doubled without a further application. It also points to the promotion of leasing procedures and building permits in the Machairas National Forest Park without adequate assessment of the presence of a protected species (Cypriot water snake). Long-term contracts in Ayia Napa have outdated terms and delays in rent revisions, resulting in lower revenue for the state. The report also records delayed revenue of €1.3 million and court defeats due to lack of documentation.
