President Raises Issue of British Bases at European Council

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, raised the issue of the British Bases at the European Council, emphasizing the need for dialogue with the British government after the end of the war in the Middle East. He expressed the view that the European Union can play a significant role in achieving progress in the Cyprus issue, as it has the tools to demonstrate the benefits of a solution to Turkey. During the discussion on the crisis in the Middle East, President Christodoulides referred to the activation of Article 42(7) of the Treaty on solidarity, due to the situation in the Bases, and called for an EU initiative to de-escalate the crisis. He also informed EU leaders about the alarms sounding in the Bases and the messages received by residents.
