Informal EU Summit: Focus on Three Key Priorities - The Guideline Document

Within the framework of the informal EU Summit, Italy, Germany, and Belgium have launched a new informal working group aimed at strengthening European competitiveness. The group, comprised of 19 member states, including Cyprus and Greece, focuses on three key priorities: completing the Single Market, regulatory simplification and reducing energy prices, as well as an ambitious trade policy. The guideline document prepared by the three countries proposes the withdrawal of unnecessary European initiatives and the establishment of a “brake” mechanism to avoid burdening businesses with excessive administrative costs. Emphasis is also placed on leveraging private capital and revising capital requirements for business financing. The discussion focused on restarting European industry, with an emphasis on revising emission taxation mechanisms, such as the Emissions Trading System (ETS) and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The need for immediate implementation of the policy priorities set by the European Council was underscored. The leaders agreed to resume coordination at the European Council in March, with the aim of keeping the issue of competitiveness on the European agenda and setting specific goals and timelines.
