Cyprus Faces Fuel Price Hikes Amidst Middle East Conflict

MP Aristos Damianou of AKEL stated that the government must take measures to prevent profiteering related to rising fuel prices, linked to the war in the Middle East. He emphasized the urgent need for an end to the war to halt negative economic impacts and ensure citizen safety. Mr. Damianou characterized the war as a result of geopolitical games, endangering smaller nations. Meanwhile, Christodoulos Christodoulou, spokesperson for the Petrol Station Owners Association, anticipates further fuel price increases in the coming days due to the war's effects. He estimates the increases will be around 4 cents, adding to the previous 2-4 cent increase. Mr. Christodoulou stressed the need for the government to reduce consumption tax and subsidize consumers, as the exact course of prices remains uncertain as long as the war continues. Both men agree that the situation is fluid and requires immediate and effective action, both in terms of ending the conflict and implementing internal economic policies.
