Aristos Damianou: The Poetry of Pavlos Liasidis is the Voice of the Cypriot People

Aristos Damianou, a member of the AKEL Political Bureau and MP, expressed his deep admiration for the poet Pavlos Liasidis at an event commemorating the 125th anniversary of his birth. Mr. Damianou emphasized that Liasidis's work is inextricably linked to the Cypriot people and the culture of Cyprus, describing him as the voice of the Cypriot countryside and a recorder of the toil, love, and pain of its people. He highlighted that the simplicity and humility of Liasidis's character reveal his greatness, while his poetry needs no exaggeration, as its value is self-evident. Liasidis, born into poverty, managed to learn the lessons of life from the rural lifestyle and the people of the countryside, starting to write poetry at a very young age. Mr. Damianou referred to Liasidis's twelve poetry collections, highlighting important works such as “Ta fkióra tis karkias mou,” “I parallai tou tzairou,” and “Na pethanei o charos,” emphasizing the eternal youth of his spirit. Despite his rural origins, Liasidis's work is distinguished by its strength and depth, appealing to all those seeking justice, freedom, and peace. Furthermore, Liasidis was also a playwright, with works such as “Alavrostoistiotis” and “O Monogios” having been staged and broadcast on television. Mr. Damianou concluded his speech by mentioning Liasidis's contribution to the Left and social justice, characterizing him as the poet of Cyprus and the Left, with an optimistic worldview for the resurrection of the oppressed.
